“Making connections to who we are as people and where we live is often not a priority, but it can make science more engaging, relatable, and meaningful.“
Dr. Christy Visaggi is a geology professor in the Department of Geosciences at Georgia State University, where she serves as Principal Senior Lecturer, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Senior Faculty Associate for Signature Experiences. With expertise in geology, paleontology, and marine science, she teaches service courses in geology for undergraduates and integrated science courses for pre-service teachers.
Dr. Visaggi is known for her innovative use of experiential learning and undergraduate research-based education. In her Principles of Paleontology course, students analyze fossils from the southeastern U.S. and present their abstracts at the Southeastern Chapter of the Geological Society of America meeting. She also promotes culturally responsive experiential and place-based learning through field trips in Georgia and undergraduate study-abroad programs, including an REU in Community Geography and GIS in Belize and a field course in The Bahamas that analyzes past geologic events and anthropogenic impacts on island systems.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Visaggi is a dedicated mentor who fosters career readiness through courses like Foundations in Geosciences and Senior Seminar, where students develop professional networking and scientific communication skills. She is also engaged in community outreach, supporting the Georgia Geographic Alliance, leading nature walks for children, and playing a key role in organizing the Atlanta Science Festival.
Through her commitment to high-impact teaching, mentorship, and community engagement, Dr. Visaggi exemplifies the excellence recognized by the OUSTA award.
