Emily Faulconer, Ph.D.

2023 OUSTA Winner, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide Campus (Daytona Beach, FL)

Dr. Emily Faulconer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Math, Science, & Technology of Emory-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide Campus where she teaches General Chemistry I, Environmental Science I & II, and Introduction to Research Methods.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought online education to the forefront of science education discourse; however, Dr. Faulconer has long been an advocate for engaging and innovative online instruction. She designs her online science courses with student, employer, and societal needs in mind. In addition to presenting content, Dr. Faulconer’s courses foster the development of science literacy skills to aid students in becoming informed members of society.

As an active researcher of online education, Dr. Faulconer has published in numerous journals such as The Journal of College Science Teaching, Distance Learning, Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration, Journal of Science Education and Technology, and The Journal of Research in Innovative Teaching & Learning.

Furthermore, Dr. Faulconer’s dedication to student success is evident in her research agenda as she is the principal investigator of two NSF-funded grants aimed at improving online student persistence and performance. It is crucial for science students to engage in research; however, it can be difficult at times to provide research opportunities for online students. Dr. Faulconer uses a collaborative community of practice framework to provide research experiences for both undergraduate and graduate students.
